Restorative Yoga Workshop

with Jessica Dewar

Nurture your body, mind, and soul with an afternoon of profound relaxation and stillness through restorative yoga

During this 2 hour session, you will be guided using bolsters, blocks, and blankets to assist in bringing your body into a state of complete relaxation. You will learn to comfortably maintain variations in asana over longer periods of time (between 5 - 15 minutes). Developed in combination with deep restorative breathing, this practice will help you to let go physically, emotionally, and mentally to replenish your energy levels.

The profound state of relaxation we enter during a restorative yoga session calms the nervous system, balances our heart rate, and regulates the functioning of our internal organs. It helps to reduce symptoms of depression, chronic fatigue and anxiety, and can improve sleep patterns.

When: Saturday, Sept 14, 2.00pm - 4.00pm
Investment: $39 +GST

Yoga Inversions for Beginners: Face your fears and learn how to practice Sirsasana & Sarvangasana safely

with Jessica Dewar

A yoga practice without inversions is like coffee without coffee beans — the essence is missing. Inversions set yoga apart from other physical disciplines. Inversions are fundamental to a balanced yoga practice, but often our fear stops us from trying.

Why are inversions important?

  • Psychologically, they teach us to see from other perspectives

  • Emotionally, they guide the energy of the pelvis (an energy of creation and personal power) toward the heart, igniting self-exploration and growth

  • Physically, they strengthen the immune and endocrine systems, nourishing the brain and stimulating organs

Sirasasana (head stand) and Sarvangasana (shoulder stand) are believed to be the king and queen of all asanas. In essence, Sirsasana improves our focus and promotes action, while Sarvangasana brings calm and receptivity. And these poses must be practiced together to bring balance to the body and mind.

To experience the profound benefits, and to prevent injury, it's essential to learn the correct setup and alignment for each pose.

In this workshop you will learn:

  • Key techniques to practice that will strengthen your core, neck and shoulders in preparation for ‘the lift’

  • Step by step how to mount and dismount Sirsasana and Sarvangasana safely

  • How to practice without the need for any props

  • When to include these poses into your daily practice

  • Common mistakes to watch out for

I practice both poses every day and recommend my students do the same. This workshop will help you to build confidence, strength and grace in both poses. And if you take the time to master them, you will reap their benefits for the rest of your life.

When: Saturday, Oct 19, 11.00am - 1.00pm

Yoga for Low Back Pain

with Jessica Dewar

Welcome yogis to Yoga for Low Back Pain. It’s unfortunate you are here, as back pain is not fun, but let me assure you there is hope. Trust me, I know where you are!

As a sufferer of chronic low back pain myself, with 5 bulging discs and scoliosis, Yoga for Low Back Pain was born out of a passion to share what has worked for me. My personal experience with chronic low back pain combined with my 10 year career in Rehabilitation (working alongside some of the top specialists in the country) has certainly taught me a thing or two when it comes to managing back pain and strengthening the back

Low back pain is becoming increasingly common in today’s day and age. Living sedentary lives, sitting at computer desks for much of the day, hunched over mobile phones, and long commutes to and from work are just some examples for why low back pain is on the rise. And unfortunately, it is likely most of us have or will experience low back pain at some point in our lives. So let’s get excited about introducing some preventative and healing steps forward to better manage low back pain.

While severe back pain should always be examined by a doctor, chronic and moderate-level back pain can often be assisted with a regular yoga practice. Yoga can be extremely beneficial in naturally strengthening and lengthening your spine, stretching your muscles, and improving your back’s alignment, which can often be a root cause of persistent back pain.

Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured.
— B.K.S. Iyengar

During this 90 minute class you will be introduced to a carefully designed yoga sequence that will aid your recovery and alleviate symptoms of back pain. We will also touch upon basic anatomy to help you understand why, where and how the low back can get injured, and how to prevent further injury in your yoga practice and day to day activities.

All students will also receive access to an online portal containing images and descriptions of all the poses you will learn in class to make sure you can maintain a daily practice at home for long term benefit and well-being.

When: Saturday, Oct 26, 11.00am - 12.30pm
