How often do you speak the words, “I can’t do this…” or “My body is not flexible..” or “I have a back back…” etc etc. Chances are you will quite possibly resonate with at least one of those statements above. I can resonate with them all!
When we break these statements down, you notice they all have a common link - they’re very self limiting. They are all statements which prevent us from progressing in our practice (among other areas of life as this doesn’t apply to just yoga). It’s important to understand that when we speak negatively about ourselves, or place limitations on what we can and cannot do, then we will absolutely bring about a world that will bring these statements to life. We shall make such limitations so.
So what happens if we were to make one slight modification to the way we speak and think about ourselves, our bodies and our own capabilities. For example, rather than “I can’t..” why not change it to “I can..” How about your perception on flexibility (as an example). Instead of telling yourself constantly how inflexible you are, why not try believing you can be very flexible with time and consistent practice.
By transforming negative perceptions to positive ones, we begin to look at ourselves, our lives differently. Suddenly the impossible becomes possible and we start taking steps to make it so. People often assume yoga is only about asana practice. What we need to remember is yoga is about controlling the mind. Learning to master our thoughts, all of which is done through asana. It is therefore crucial to begin shifting your self perceptions toward positive and encouraging thoughts to allow your body the freedom it needs to go that little bit deeper. Such a simple concept which can make all the difference to your practice and how far your body can go.
Trust your body, believe in your body and I promise your body will begin to move in ways you once never thought possible.
